Windows 7 may brand new OS , but that doesn't mean we can't find free tools to tweak its settings, supplement its features, or smooth an upgrade from XP or Vista. After NY analysis I compiled a list of valuable software tools--many of them free--that can make your Win 7 experience a lot more rewarding
Microsoft Security
Windows 7 doesn't provide built-in protection against malware such as viruses and spyware. It does have a firewall, You could pay McAfee or Symantec for this service, Microsoft Security Essentials provides solid protection for home PCs, and it's gratis. If you like to have some thing else , check out AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition instead.

Easy Transfer won't hang if it comes across a file or setting it can't move. Rather, it will complete the transfer and then provide a report detailing everything it couldn't copy

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
Don't upgrade to Windows 7 before running this free utility from Microsoft. Upgrade Advisor scans your PC to see if it's ready for Windows 7. If it detects any potential problems--from insufficient memory to incompatible hardware to outdated software--it'll let you know in a summary report.

Good article.. a nice nifty listing of tools that can help people with day to day functionality and help end users extract even that last bit from their OS.. Although the order of apps posted is not great, as Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor should be given the top preference, it does list it..considering that, its a good article and will prove to be moderately useful for many basic end users
I already have Microsoft Security Essentials. its been good so far, but I have had it for like 4 days only now..
I am checking Ninite now too, it seems like a good option ;)

I must say that the articles author is very switched on and knows what they're talking about, but upon downloading some of these essentials I found them to be far from this. Windows easy transfer is shocking piece of software that makes if difficult to try and do something simple and gives you a list of everything that didn't work. In my opinion if your installing 7 from Vista or XP a manual copy of your files is fully sufficient. Easy transfer is far from a necessity when one installs a fresh copy of 7.
