Acer to launch 8-10 smartphones in 2010

Acer plans to launch 8-10 new smartphones in 2010 with Android-powered models likely to be slightly more than Windows Mobile-based ones, according to sources at Taiwan handset industry.Acer will outsource the production of three Android-based smartphones to Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), using ST-Ericsson PNX6719 3G chipset solutions for the entry-level segment, the sources said. On the other hand, Inventec Appliances will roll out entry-level Windows Mobile-based smartphones for Acer.

Acer is planning to outsource the production of three Android-based smartphones to Foxconn and use ST-Ericsson PNX6719 3G chipset solutions for the entry-level segment.

The low-end Windows Mobile based gear will be made by Inventec. Acer is already committed to bunging Qualcomm's Snapdragon chip into its phones in the mid-range to high-end segments while sub-contracting the production of the handsets to Compal.

Digitimes thinks Acer is also considering moving to Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform in a bid to offer inexpensive models to compete with HTC and also to attract more interest from telecom carriers
